WHS 38-Central Heights 7, Eagles Claim Outright League Title … on verge of playoffs. LaMay Goes over 1,000 yards

Eagles are now 8-0, 2-0 in districts

Central Heights struck first on their first play from scrimmage on an end around, going 70 yards to put Wellsville in the hole to start the game.  But the Eagles came right back on a five minute scoring drive, scoring on a 21 yard touchdown pass from Luke Meyer to Nolan Rush. The 2-point conversion put the Eagles up 8-7.

Wellsville would control the rest of the game, finishing with the 38-7 victory and the outright Pioneer League title.

Jesse LaMay rushed for 117 yards, giving him 1115 yards to date this season. Shane Hillman led all rushers with 167 yards on 13 carries. He now has 799 yards on the season. Nolan Rush continued to make a statement as one of the top receivers in 3A football, hauling in five passes for 127 yards and three touchdowns.

Wellsville’s defensive line proved to be a brick wall once again. Seniors Shane Pokorney, Drake Carolan, Ryan Klamm and Logan O’Dea accounted for 40 tackles (19 unassisted), 2 QB sacks, 5 tackles for losses, 3 caused fumbles … one of which was returned for a touchdown. O’Dea caused one of those fumbles, scooped it up and sprinted 35 yards for a touchdown.

Linebacker Billy Qualls had a stellar game with 11 tackles.

Next game is at home against West Franklin on THURSDAY, 10/27. It will be Senior Night for Cross Crounty, Football and Volleyball athletes.

The Eagles battle the Central Heights Vikings in the second of three district games. Both teams are 1-0 so this game has big playoff implications. This is also a PIoneer League game.  The Eagles are already league champs, but are looking to finish undefeated in league play for the second consecutive year.

Eagles Secure Pioneer Title in Homecoming Game

WHS now 6-0, Overpower Prairie View 74-26. District play up next. where The Eagles travel to Uniontown.

Wellsville overran the Prairie View Buffalo defense, amassing 545 yards in winiing 74-26. The Eagles never needed to punt. Six different Eagle players scored points while Coach Luedtke used 11 ball carriers. And in the process, Wellsville earned their second straight Pioneer League Championship.

It wasn’t a pretty game though. The game featured 205 yards in penalties; 128 for the Buffs and WHS adding 77 of their own. Many of the penalties were for personal fouls. It was a rough game. GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

On Offense:

• Rushing – Jesse LaMay 13 carries for 165 yrads/3 TD’s, Shane Hillman 13 carries for 133 yards/1 TD, Kevin Hopkins 10 carries 71 yards/1 TD, Kenneth Hopkins had 71 yards on 10 carries/1 TD
• Nolan Rush, 1 carry for 54 yards/1TD, and 3 receptions for 55 yards/2 TD’s.

On Defense

• Hillman, Hopkins and Carter Mann each had an interception. Nolan Rush had 2 interceptions giving him 5 for the season now.
• Matt Torneden had 13 tackles (7 unassisted)
• Shane Pokorney had a career game: 11 tackles, a QB sack,and 3 tackles for losses
• Logan O’Dea had his third consecutive game with double digit tackles

PIONEER LEAGUE TITLE AT STAKE

Prairie View visits Wellsville this Friday, coming in with a 4-1 record. They also have a 3-0 league record, as do the Eagles. These are the two front runners for Pioneer League Champions. The winner of this game will be in the drivers seat to be Champs.

This is a challenging game for the undefeated Wellsville Eagles.The Buffalos recently posted a 34-0 win and last week put up 56 points against Osawatomie. The Eagle defense will no doubt be tested.

A lot is at stake in the game.

Friday’s Game, 9/30/11, Eagles 42 Council Grove 14, O’Dea Leads Defense with Stellar Game

Wellsville improves to 5-0

It was a tight first half. The Eagles scored first with about three minutes left in the 1st quarter, on a 4 yard run from Jesse LaMay. The Council Grove Braves countered early in the 2nd quarter with a 45 yard touchdown drive, but missed on their extra point, leaving Wellsville with an 8-6 lead.

Shane Hillman would give the Eagles another touchdown before the half on a 23 yard run. With the 2-point conversion, the teams went into the locker room as the led 16-6.

Wellsville received the kickoff to start the half, but on the first play from scrimmage, fumbled, giving the Council Grove the ball at the Wellsville 30 yard line. It took the Braves just 5 plays tp cross the goal ilne on a 10 yard run by Dereck Reddick. A successful 2-point conversion cut Wellsville’s lead to 16-14. But that was close as Council Grove would get.

From then on, the Eagle defense shut down the Braves running attack while Wellsville’s offense kicked it in high gear to finish the game with 4 more touchdowns for the 42-14 win.

On defense, Logan O’Dea had a spectacular game. In short, he was unstoppable from his defensive line position. He registered 17 tackles for the night; including 11 unassisted tackles and 4 tackles for losses. The previous week at Osawatomie, O’Dea had 15 tackles including 2 QB sacks, 3 tackles for a loss and a caused fumble.

On offense, Jesse LaMay had 168 yards rushing on 16 carries with 3 touchdowns. Shane Hillman did an admirable job of filling in for the injured Cole Gardner; rushing for 127 yards and passing for 71 more.

PREGAME Discussion

Council Grove comes in with a deceiving 1-3 record. The Braves are coming off a convincing win over Mission Valley. The combined record of teir 4 previous opponents is 13-3. This team is far better than their record might indicate.

It will be strength vs strength. CG has an imposing front line that averages close to 300 pounds per man, and these are pretty mobile big men. They’ll be going head to head against Wellsville’s experienced and accomplished but much smaller line.

Keep an eye out for the Braves running back Derron Reddick. He has been averaging almost 200 yards per game this season.

Wellsville 46  Osawatomie 6, 9/23/2011

It was a typical 2011 game for the Eagles from Wellsville; a dominating 46-6 win over the Osawatomie Trojans with strong defense, a consistent rushing attack and timely passing. In fact, “strong defense” might be an understatement.

Outside of the Trojan’s 79 yard touchdown sprint by speedster Brandon Oakes, they could only manage another 52 rushing yards on 33 carries. Osawatomie picked up 43 more yards on three of passing for the game.

Running back, Jesse LaMay,  had a career game averaging 9 ½ yards a carry for 201 yard earned yards on 21 attempts. In the process, LaMay crossed the goal line three times. Clearly the offensive line continues to do it’s job as well.

Wellsville’s defensive line gave no quarter. The front line defensive tackle trio of Drake Carolan, Logan O’Dea and Shane Pokorney combined for  27  tackles, including 16 unassisted. Logan O’Dea also had a career day with 15 total tackles, three of those for losses and 2 quarterback sacks. At line backer, Billy Qualls totaled 8 tackles and added, for good measure, an interception that he returned 57 yards for his first high school touchdown.  This was a nice follow up to his stellar performance the previous week at Olpe where he registered 12 tackles.

Also scoring for the Eagles; Nolan Rush hauled in two touchdown passes from Cole (Goober) Gardner.  Gardner also had 2 rushing touchdowns on runs of 15 and 5 yards.

Next up, the Council Grove Braves will visit Wellsville Friday 9/30/11.  The Braves are just coming off a very convincing 35-14 win over Mission Valley. This game will be a challenge for the Eagles. Council Grove boasts one of the biggest lines in 3A football, averaging almost 300 pounds per man. Rumor has it that these are not “lumbering giants”, they are very mobile.

Eagles win 32-7 in hard hitting battle vs Olpe, 9/16/11

Eagles now 3-0. Next game at Osawatomie, Friday 7PM 9/23/11

Olpe is one of the top high school programs in class 2A football. They played like it. But Wellsville was able to overcome a determined Olpe defense and win a very hard hitting game 32-7.

Gains on the ground were hard to come by for WHS. The vaulted Eagles rushing attack was held to 3.5 yards per carry for 188 yards.  But Coach Luedtke opened up the passing game. It worked to the tune of three touchdowns and another 163 yards.

The Gardner to Rush passing combination was particularly in sync. Cole Gardner hit Noln Rush six times for 124 yards and two TD’s.

The game didn’t start well. On the game’s first possession, Olpe drove the ball 70 yards to take a 7-0 lead. But the Wellsville defense was a brick wall after that. Olpe could only manage another 20 yards on the ground the rest of the game.

It was Nolan Rush’s game. Besides his stellar effort as a receiver, he shined from his defensive back position pulling in 3 of Olpe’s passes for interceptions

Wellsville Dominates Jayhawks, 56-6, WHS Eagles @ Jayhawk-Linn, 9/2/11

Wellsville dominated from start to finish. Halftime score was 42-0.

With the seniors and starters out towards the end of the 2nd quarter, the Eagles outplayed the Jayhawk 1st team varsity 14-6 in the second half.

The Eagles rushing game averaged over 9 yards a carry for 352 yards. Quarterback Cole Gardner completed all 3 of his passes for 86 yard and 3 touchdowns.

Individually on offense;
- Shane Hillman(jr), 5 carrises, 106 yards, 2 TDs
- Jesse LaMay(sr), 8 carries 75 yards, 1 TD
- Brett Osbern(fr), 7 carries for 70 yards

Individually on Defense:
- Tackle,Ryan Klamm had a safety
Logan O’Dea was the leading tackler with 6 (5 unassisted)

Eagles defense shuts down the Bulldogs offense in the 2nd half to pull away. 9/9/11

• Drake Carolan registers 6 solo tackles for losses
• LaMay, Rush and Gardner standout on offense
• O-Line shines, WHS puts up 444 yards offense
• Defense holds AC’s top rusher to 38 Yards

Anderson County started the game with a bang. Thomas Mudd returned the opening kickoff 90 yards 90 yards, giving the Anderson County a quick 7-0 lead. It would be the Bulldogs only lead of the night.

Wellsville answered quickly though. With their first possession, the Eagles drove 63 yards, scoring on a 33 yard TD pass from Cole Gardner to Nolan Rush.

The Eagles would score two more touchdowns in 1st quarter with the Bulldogs adding one more themselves. At the end of the first quarter it was WHS 21 AC 13.

Anderson County opened the 2nd quarter with a quick 55 yard touchdown pass and 2-point conversion to tie the game at 21-all. From that point on it was all Wellsville.

The Eagle defense dug in and didn’t allow another Bulldog score. The Eagles would go on to score three more touchdowns in the game for a 43-21 victory.

Wellsville finished the game with 354 yards rushing on 59 carries and 90 yards passing for 444 yards in total offense.

There were numerous stellar performances for the Eagles.

• Standing out on defense was Drake Carolan,who finished with 8 tackles including 6 solo tackles and a QB sack. All 6 solo tackles were for losses totaling minus 18 yards.
• Offensively, Cole Gardner had 24 carries for 152 yards
• Jesse LaMay rushed for 137 yards on 24 carries.
• Nolan Rush was the recipient of all three Gardner pass completions for 90 yards receiving.

PREGAME Talk:

This game is big. The Eagles are the defending Pioneer League champions and the Buldogs are coming off a solid 6-4 season in 2010 and they return a bunch of of talent and experience. AC is expected to be one of the top 4A teams in the state.

Expect the Bulldogs to be hungry and very motivated. They are coming off a difficult and disappointing loss to Pioneer League Rival Osawatomie.

The Bulldogs will miss the services of Alen Troyer, who rushed for 1,800 yards last year, but Thomas Mudd (5-10, 175) and Seth Bowman (5-11, 195) combined for more than 1,500 yards and 17 scores.?”

Wellsville FBLA competed in the 2011 FBLA State Leadership Conference at Topeka on March 31-April 1 and our kids did EXTREMELY WELL.  We have six students who qualified for nationals in Orlando, Florida this summer.  The students are Katelyn Barthol, Brandon Ebeck, Tayler Graham, Trenton Meyer, Derek Moore and Whitney Schmidt.  With approximately 1,800 students from 99 schools from across Kansas, our Wellsville kids helped to make our school stand out in a truly positive way.
Jayci Prough  represented the WHS choir program proudly by singing the national anthem at the opening session.  This is the first time a Wellsville student has been selected to sing the national anthem.  And Tayler Graham was elected to the position of Kansas FBLA State Editor.  She did a wonderful job of campaigning and gave a great speech.
We are extremely proud of our kids and the job both parents and faculty (K-12) have done to educate our kids.  Thanks for working with FBLA and thanks for supporting them.  These kids really do make a difference.

Senior – Zach Hoehn (125 lb) made his 4th appearance at Hays and brought home his 4th medal. ( Freshman-3rd, sophomore year-2nd, and junior year -1st place.)  Hoehn placed 3rd this year bringing his record for the season to 41-4.

Senior – Jesse Campbell (189 lb) made his 2nd appearance at Hays and brought home a 6th place medal.  Campbell had earned a 6th place medal last year as a junior in the 171 lb. division.  Record for the season 37-7. “Admin” note: Jesse wrestled despite a serious elbow injury. Who knows what could have been if he were healthy.

Junior – Jesse LeMay (160 lb) was also making his 2nd appearance at Hays.  LeMay brought home a 2nd place medal after the championship match against senior Landonn Keiswetter from Norton.  LeMay ended his season with a 31-7 record.
